RI proposes joint perspective discussion on climate change

Jakarta, Suara Indonesia News - An Indonesian delegation led by the State Minister for the Environment Rahmat Witoelar ask the participanting countries to discuss matters relating to climate change.

"The Indonesian delegation underlined the importance of joint perspective discussion to keep the Bali Action Plan to reach joint agreement on climate change in the 15th Conference of Parties (COP) in Copenhagen in 2009," Indonesian Ambassador to Poland Hazairin Pohan said.

According to a press release, the in-depth collective point of view will be discussed in the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Conventions on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

The Indonesian delegation made the call at the opening of the COP-14 in Poznan, Poland, while some delegations from the developing countries, expressed objection and wished that the joint point of view to be discussed in the first plenary session in 2009.
The objection is based on their fear that the joint perspective discussion will concern mitigation or emission reduction which will make things difficult for the developing countries.

The developing countries may get a new obligation on emission reductions.

"The Indonesian delegation considers the discussion on the joint perspective is necessary because it serves the interest of the developing countries in reaching economic growth and eradicate poverty," Pohan said.

"The joint perspective must be seen as an integrated approach which gives attention not only to emission reduction but also to other climate change issues such as adaptation, technology transfer and funding," a member of the Indonesian delegation, Agus Purnomo, said.

The Indonesian delegation also urged the developed countries to show their leadership in global efforts of implementing the convention. It also asked the developed countries to play an important role by implementing the environmentally friendly development policy which is supported by technology and funds.
